Why are my periods so heavy?

Why Are My Periods So Heavy? Let’s Talk TCM!

By Beach Acupuncture

Ever feel like your period is way heavier than it should be? You’re not alone — and TCM has a lot to say about why this happens. Let’s explore the deeper meaning behind heavy periods, one symptom at a time!

1. Blood Heat 🔥🩸

In TCM, “heat in the blood” can cause your period to come early and heavy, with bright red blood and clots. You might also feel irritable, thirsty, or have acne around your cycle.

Common causes: stress, spicy food, overwork, or inflammation.

What helps: cooling foods like cucumber, peppermint tea, and acupuncture to clear excess heat.

2. Qi Deficiency 🫠⚡️

Qi is your body’s vital energy. When it’s weak or “deficient,” it can’t hold blood in the vessels properly — leading to heavy, prolonged bleeding. You might also feel tired, dizzy, or bloated.

Common causes: overwork, lack of rest, poor digestion.

What helps: strengthening the Spleen with warming foods (like congee), rest, and gentle movement.

3. Blood Stagnation 🌀🩸

If your flow is heavy with dark clots and cramping, it could mean blood isn’t moving smoothly. This is “blood stagnation” in TCM.

Common causes: emotional stress, cold exposure, or past trauma.

What helps: acupuncture, warming the uterus (moxa or ginger compresses), and avoiding cold/raw foods.

4. Kidney Deficiency 🌊🖤

Your Kidneys store essence (Jing) and play a key role in menstruation. When Kidney energy is low, cycles can become irregular or heavy — especially during perimenopause.

Common signs: low back pain, fatigue, feeling cold, thinning hair.

What helps: nourishing Kidney foods (like black sesame, bone broth), early bedtime, and herbal support.
