Turning Baby Naturally: Moxibustion for Breech Birth

At Beach Acupuncture, we support your pregnancy journey with safe, time-tested methods rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). One gentle and effective technique we love to offer during pregnancy is moxibustion—especially for those navigating a breech presentation in the third trimester.

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional heat therapy that involves burning a herb called mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near specific acupuncture points on the body. It’s a comforting, non-invasive treatment that has been used for centuries to encourage balance, warmth, and movement of Qi (energy).

When it comes to breech birth, the focus is on a point located on the pinky toe called Bladder 67 (Zhiyin). By applying gentle heat near this point, we stimulate the uterus and promote the baby’s natural tendency to turn into the optimal position for birth—head down.

Why Use Moxibustion for Breech Babies?

Around 32–36 weeks, if your baby is still in the breech position, your midwife or OB may begin discussing options. While Western medicine offers manual versions or planned cesareans, TCM provides a gentle, holistic alternative that works with your body—not against it. The National Library of Medicine states that “Moxibustion application increased the rate of vertex presentation at birth and also vaginal delivery rate compared with expectant management. Offering moxibustion between the 32nd and 36th week of gestation may provide women with a singleton fetus in breech presentation an opportunity for a vaginal birth”

Here are the top benefits of moxibustion for breech birth:

  • Promotes natural movement: Moxibustion encourages your baby to turn head down without force.

  • Non-invasive and safe: There’s no physical manipulation, just warmth and support.

  • Empowering and relaxing: Many parents love that it gives them something proactive to do at home.

  • Supports overall balance: The treatment also helps calm the nervous system and nourish the uterus.

How Does It Work?

In clinic, we demonstrate the technique and provide moxa sticks for home use. Typically, the treatment is done daily for 7–10 days while you relax in a comfortable seated or side-lying position. The warmth feels deeply soothing, and the practice becomes a grounding ritual during this transformative time.

When to Start

Moxibustion is most effective between 34–36 weeks, when there’s still room for baby to move. The earlier we start, the better the results. In some cases, even babies past 37 weeks can turn with consistent treatment.

Is It Right for You?

If you’re pregnant with a breech baby and curious about natural methods of support, we’d love to guide you through a moxibustion protocol tailored to your body. We work in collaboration with your birth team and ensure your safety and comfort every step of the way.
